You'll develop a deep understanding of mental health and addiction across the lifespan — from the fundamentals of addictions and the foundations of mental health to the pharmacology of medications, substances and the brain. You'll explore the complex relationship between human development and mental health, and build a strong clinical foundation in counselling skills, group facilitation, trauma-informed crisis response, relapse prevention and recovery planning.
Equally important, you'll develop the cultural competency and ethical awareness to work with diverse populations through courses in anti-oppressive practice, diversity in counselling, and community-based healing approaches. Modules in case management, documentation, community outreach and referral will prepare you to navigate real-world service systems with confidence. You'll also receive Standard First Aid and CPR certification, equipping you to respond in any environment.
Put your training into action through 450 hours of supervised field placement in community mental health and social service settings, where you'll apply your learning alongside experienced professionals. To help you launch your career, OIHI offers career fairs, networking events, resume-writing assistance, interview preparation and one-on-one counselling.
